Choosing the right keyword is the foundation of successful search engine optimization. Fortunately there are a number of free online tools to help you identify potential keywords and analyze their strengths.

Keyword Research Tools

Google AdWords Keyword Tool. This is Google’s official AdWords keyword research tool. The tool generates keyword ideas and analytical information on each term.

SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool. SEO Book’s Keyword Suggestion tool is powered by Wordtracker and cross references Google, Yahoo!, Bing, and more. It is free upon joining SEO Book for a free membership.

Google Insights for Search. Compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, time frames and properties. Narrow data to specific categories, anticipate seasonality, analyze geographic distribution, and search patterns in other Google properties.

Google Trends. Use commas to compare multiple search terms. Enter up to five topics and see how often they’ve been searched on Google over time.

Microsoft Advertising Intelligence. Microsoft Advertising Intelligence is a keyword research and optimization tool that operates in Microsoft Office Excel. It provides keyword expansion, research, pricing and KPI — key performance indicator — data. Build out lists of suggested keywords and develop keyword strategies based on Bing and Yahoo! network data.

Free Search Term Suggestion Tool. This tool by Keyword Discovery accesses data compiled from over 200 search engines worldwide. Type a seed keyword and generate the top 100 keywords.

SEMRush. Access data from more than 80 million keywords. For any site, get Google keywords, find hidden keywords, investigate long-tail keywords, discover competitors’ sites with common Google keywords, and more. A free user has a limit of only 10 queries/day and 10 results/query.

KGen. KGen (Keyword Generator) is an add-on for Firefox. KGen retrieves every word of a page and lists how many times they appear, their weight, and their average position in the page.

Free Keyword Suggestion Tool from Wordtracker. This free keyword suggestion tool from Wordtracker can generate up to 100 related keyword phrases and show daily searches.

Wordpot Free Keyword Tool. Enter a keyword and get the 50 most popular keyword listings, as well as additional keyword information. Get 20 daily keyword searches by signing up for an account.

Soovle. Soovle is a keyword research tool that compares the amount of queries between 7 major websites and presents the results in a visually appealing layout..

Google Correlate. Google Correlate finds search patterns that correspond with real-world trends. You can also enter a query to find search terms that have a similar pattern of activity historically. Or find terms that match the dataset of a location.

Yahoo! Search Clues. Find out what people are searching for on Yahoo! Trend analysis gives where and when information on searches. Compare trends between search terms.

Rank Checker. Rank Checker is a Firefox plugin to get rank information on any search engine results page (SERP). Enter chosen keywords and domains, and Rank Checker will pull information from your specified search engines and tell you which page is being ranked.

NicheBot Classic. Type a keyword or phrase and get the top 50 most popular keyword listings.

SEOquake. SEOquake is an extension for Mozilla Firefox browser, which allows you to look through different search engine parameters on the fly. Along with a large assortment of other tools, it offers a tool to analyze keywords frequency and density.

Keyword Typo Generator. Use this tool to generate a list of typos and common misspellings for AdWords ads and domain names. This software and script should help you in the generation of low competition keywords.

Keyword Questions. Find the popular questions people are asking in your market. Target long tail keywords and provide content that readers want to read and link to.

Trendistic. Trendistic provides a historical chart — up to 180 days — of trending topics in Twitter. Enter a term and see its trend. See what topics are hot.

Thesaurus.com. Thesaurus.com is by Dictionary.com. It provides synonyms and antonym, and lists search trends.

Synonym.com. Synonym.com provides synonyms, antonyms, and definitions. Type in a word and the synonym finder will come up with a list of synonyms. It also lists the most popular online synonym searches.

MetaGlossary. MetaGlossary harvests definitions from the entire web. It extracts the meanings of terms and phrases from the mass of information on the web. MetaGlossary organizes these meanings based on topic and usage, defining even your most field-specific jargon.
